It just gets more and more bizarre.
The Los Angeles Unified School District’s lawyers are arguing as follows. When a middle school teacher convinced a 14-year-old girl to have a 5-month sexual liaison with him, she was old enough to give consent. The district is therefore blameless.
This is the second-largest school district in the United States.
The girl is suing the district four years later. The school district is not arguing that the two of them concealed the affair, and the man was fired as soon as the affair was discovered. “Therefore, the district is blameless.” Instead, the district is taking the position that the girl was promiscuous, so the district is blameless.
When a school district goes before a jury with this argument, it means that the lawyers figure the district can get away with this. They assume that the public really is that far gone. The jury will not convict.
School officials have consented to this line of reasoning. They are willing to go to the voters and say: “This is our story, and we’re sticking to it.”
The school district is saying: “Send your kids into our schools. We will treat them as adults.” As far as the school district is concerned, it is not in loco parentis any more. It is just plain loco parents.
I see this as one more reason to homeschool your children.
