In another example of how the Department of Homeland Security has expanded far outside the purview of its original function, six vehicles full of DHS agents were required to seize a Land Rover from a couple in Statesville, N.C. due to the fact that the vehicle allegedly violates EPA emission standards.
As part of its mission to “protect the Homeland,” the DHS has been busy seizing imported vehicles that don’t comply with safety and CO2 regulations.
Jennifer and Bill Brinkley were satisfied that their $60,000 dollar purchase of a Land Rover Defender on eBay complied with regulations because it fell into the exemption category of a vehicle 25 years or older.
However, when DHS agents turned up at the property, they compared the car’s Vehicle Identification Number to a list and immediately seized the Land Rover. The couple were not given “a chance to debate the issue.”
WBTV’s Steve Ohnesorge said DHS agents conducted “almost like a raid to get the car.”
“it’s just unnerving the way they did it,” said Bill Brinkley.
The feds have given the Brinkley’s 35 days to appeal the seizure but refuse to tell them where the vehicle is located. The DHS has also failed to respond to media requests about the incident.
The Department of Homeland Security, created in the aftermath of 9/11, was tasked with the role of protecting America from terrorists, man-made accidents and natural disasters. However, the DHS has been turned into a national police force with a remit that extends from seizing websites for copyright infringement to confiscating fake NFL merchandise.

Vehicle was seized because the VIN number had been "altered" in an attempt to make it look older than twenty years old, and therefore exempt. This is just one of the idiotic EPA regulations to take away the freedoms and cause havoc in our country….the EPA is the cause of the coal industry being destroyed (50% of your electricity is powered by coal) Thousands of workers make their living and have for generations in the coal mines…I also understand that there are several local fire departments that were given old militray vehicles to help locals fight fires….they have all been reclaimed and are being picked up and destroyed because the EPA says they are causing pollution…..what the heck do they think the fires these locals won't be able to fight will cause in polluting??? P.S. I just went and looked up about VIN numbers. It is a Federal "FELONY" offense to tamper, alter, deface, remove, replace, or change, etc. any VIN number, and other 'major assembly numbers' such as engine block numbers, on any vehicle, it is against the law in most if not all states. I think the reason for this goes back to Timothy McVeigh (sp.). They managed to track him down, if I remember correctly, via the casting number, on the rear end, of the rented truck that he used in the Oklahoma bombing, that was found two or three city blocks away. I still think it was way overkill to have Homeland Security involved, but perhaps not, with what I have mentioned above in this paragraph. Seething in Calif.

Florida has a regulation that allows police to pull the tag of any car that smokes too much (visible emissions per the EPA) which I like. I have watched them pull the tag of an out of state car that smoked so much it was a hazzard to traffic. These people were scammed as the seller probably couldn't license the car due to the lack of emissions equipment required here when it was built. They overpaid for the car, but should be given the oppertunity to bring it up to the regulations. They also should be able to get their money back from the seller for selling an "illegal" vehicle.

Did you actually read the article you posted? One of the trucks is a 1983 work truck, but the DHS officials took it anyway — clearly not part of the more recent "illegally imported" trucks. The point of the article is overreach by law enforcement. The article you cite confirms this.
But home land security?? That's OVERKILL however you look at it!! Never give up liberty for security or you lose both!
So a full platoon from the armed forces of Homeland Security was necessary to seize property from this poor couple. Well, I guess they're lucky at that. A full company from the armed forces of Bureau of Land Management was necessary to defend against a rancher in Nevada.
