Chicago Murder Rates Drop After Illinois Passes Conceal Carry Law

Posted on April 5, 2014

In July of 2013, Illinois became the last state in the union to enact a concealed carry law. In January of this year, the state began accepting applications for permits. This week, Chicago police announced that the city’s first quarter murder rate was the lowest since 1958.

Via ABC-affiliate Eye Witness News in the Windy City:

  • The first three months of the year saw 6 fewer murders than the same time frame in 2013–a 9 percent drop–and 55 fewer murders than 2012, according to a statement from Chicago Police.
  • There were 90 fewer shootings and 119 fewer shooting victims, drops of 26 and 29 percent respectively, according to police statistics.
  • Compared to the first quarter of 2012, there have been 222 fewer shootings and 292 fewer shooting victims. Overall crime is down 25 percent from last year, and police said more than 1,300 illegal guns were recovered in the last three months.

Coincidence? Hard to say. And too early to tell. Although, I doubt that the anti-gun crowd is celebrating the good news.

Gun crime experts John Lott, Jr. and David Mustard made the famous argument in “Crime, Deterrence, and Right-to-Carry Concealed Firearms” that: “When state concealed handgun laws went into effect in a county, murders fell by 8.5 percent, and rapes and aggravated assaults fell by 5 and 7 percent.” More guns mean less crime.

Gary Kleck, PhD., also a gun crime expert, found that the crime deterrence effect of firearms possession is significant: sophisticaed statistics suggest three to four crimes are stopped by a handgun than are committed in the United States every year.

    Imagine that!

  2. We will just have to wait and see how the maobamunist's sons and daughters react to the new law. In due time they will become restless and the crime numbers will shoot back up again.

  3. Although this is welcome news, it's too soon to break out the champagne. This past winter was particularly severe and may have had more to do with the drop in crime than anything. Besides guns in the hands of citizens, bad weather is a profound crime depressant.

  4. Mojojojo says:

Gee, I wonder why nobody wants to try to hurt people anymore? It's only too logical.

  5. oldgringo says:

What is it that Barack Obama and his fellow CommieCRats in NY and Connecticutt just "don't get it" with these statistics?

  6. Because how many people die at the hands of criminals takes a back seat to disarming citizens and turning them into powerless sheep who depend on the government for everything.

  7. AD Roberts says:

    Criminals aren't stupid.
Gun-grabbing elitist Democrats and RINOs ARE. ………… No, That probably is not true. They know that an armed public reduces crime. But it also makes it a lot harder to set up a dictatorship and implement ONE WORLD ORDER.

  8. AD Roberts says:

They KNOW. They are just pretending that disarming us makes us safer.
In truth, we are NOT safer from criminals or from THEM. That they also know.

  9. AD Roberts says:

That is certainly what I would expect to hear from Feinstein, Rahn, and Obama. But not from people who realize just how imperiled we are by these elitists.

  10. AD Roberts says:

I am more inclined to believe there will be an upswing in shootings too. But it will be just like in Detroit where citizens start to FIGHT BACK.

  11. Nikita63 says:

This is the trend everywhere people exercise the right to carry. The crime rate drops and so does the incidences of gun related incidents because perpetrators will not willingly accost someone they might know or at least feel is armed and can defend themselves. It really is THAT simple and statistically, it is borne out all over this country. The Swiss require all serving in the military to retain their weapons and be competent with them after their release to civilian life. They have the lowest crime rate in Europe. Britain ended gun ownership in private hands as did Australia and BOTH saw dramatic Increases in gun and other related crimes. Gun control only works for those who have no business obtaining them but who will illegally anyway and THAT is the fault of overregulation and the attempts to make criminals for political reasons, of LAW ABIDING FIREARMS OWNERS! Britain is now reconsidering private gun ownership as a way of reducing crime. If it Ain't broke: DON'T FIX IT!

  12. Gun free zones promote gun violence on those who cannot protect themselves, when will law makers understand this ?

  13. Meathead says:

Conceal Carry works. Gun Free Zones don't work. IQ to understand this fact is ?????.

  14. Scott L. says:

Not necessarily. You know how the criminals hate it, when you can shoot back.

  15. It certainly could be part of it; this Summer will likely tell us more of the story. I'd almost welcome the news that shootings were up – IF those being shot are the thugs that have infested Chicago for so many decades! I mean let's face it: Chicago's Law enforcement sure hasn't had much effect on criminal activity – and if the Law can't, or won't, then it's up to the People!

  16. Simple question is wouldn't the average person think twice before attacking someone if they did not know they had a gun ? Most states that allow carry permits have lower crime rates .

  17. I’m sure the liberal progressive communistic democrats will say this is just a coincidence but we all know better.

Finally the crooks in Chicago have a little competition when it comes to having a gun. Crooks carry guns for offense law abiding citizens carry guns for self-defense! Big difference there. Just another reason why gun free zones make no sense! However, we even have them in Arizona. Not everyone here obeys them however. Keep in mind the crooks never do.

  18. Proof that more guns in the hands of law abiding citizens equals less violent crime. Had they armed all soldiers on base at Fort Hood this second shooting would not have occured or at the very least been nullified quickly with less damage. But Obama knows less guns assures more violence so he left them unarmed. In hopes of a reoccurence. So they could falsely push gun control to the ignorant devoid of common sense, reason and logic. He is waiting with baited breath for another school shooting. All it takes is anither crazy liberal with a gun and their target with no ability to shoot back. Gun free zones are the most dangerous places on earth.

  19. "Britain is now reconsidering private gun ownership as a way of reducing crime". That'll make Piers Morgan's head explode.

  20. I am sure that Obama and his troops in the White House are scratching their heads and saying "what happened"? how could this be?

  21. kc135topboom says:

Unfortunately, the lying Chicago politicians will claim it is their anti-gun polices that lead to the drop in crimes and murders. They will grab local headlines claiming "see? our policies are working".

  22. Culling the herd of our criminal subculture is the only real answer to the problem. The ruling class isn't going to do anything as long as they aren't threatened, and we pay taxes to protect, not ourselves, but them.

  23. grumpy3625 says:

There's too much evidence to the contrary. It just got dangerous for them.

  24. Do our people not understand that any alleged "law" made by governments that are nothing more than chartered corporations are illegal and unlawful WHEN APPLIED TO THE PEOPLE The supreme Law of the Land, and the inherent, inalienable rights of our people to keep and bear arms, is the Law and any government bunch of bureaucrats that enforce other than this are traitors to America. There is nothing complicated about this. The simple fact is that we people have allowed government to change into operations putting the people in servitude and complicity to their unconstitutional acts. Quit blaming government until you realize we, the people, allowed the development of Gestapo Ameri-Ka. They fault is that being weak and lusting for power and financial gain allowed them to act as if they have power over us when the exact opposite is the truth. They are traitors but so are we since we are complicit with their actions, treating them as great people and all the other BS associated with 99 percent of our people fearing to act against government.

Quit acting as if government has the authority to order the denial of your rights. That is the solution. We do not have to ask permission which effectively changes rights to privileges allowed by those allegedly given the responsibility for assuring those every rights are defended, not controlled by them. Do your duty, which is to assure that those that are elected and/or appointed do theirs. Do not allow fear to rule you and your neighbors. Get together and undestand this – we are not under the administrative rules of government – we are under the Law that we may not do anything that interferes with the rights of others by harming either them or their property. We are the sovereign, not the government who are artificial entities. They are the persons in their regulations, not we people, as government is subservient to us – at least in the real America.

  25. I know, right? Does it REALLY take a genius to figure that one out?

  26. Kinda hard to explain this away, Hey ? But you know they will certainly attempt to.

  27. Ruth Walker says:

Selective reporting to try to prove a point that may not apply, this (from another account of it) was omitted:

•"We are making significant progress by putting additional officers in high-crime areas, using intelligence to prevent retaliatory shootings, moving officers from administrative positions back to the streets," Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said in a statement.

  28. WhiteFalcon says:

Boy, that was hard to predict, wasn't it. As soon as law abiding citizens are allowed to defend themselves, crime rate goes down. A no brainer. It is hard on pro mafia folks though. Don't you just feel so bad for them? HeHeHe

  29. Not to interrupt the cheerleading, but murders went right back up in Q2 and Q3. Murders were down in Q1 because of a particularly bad winter and, at any rate, no CCW permits were issued in Q1.

  30. Not really. Murders went right back up in Q2 and Q3. Murders were down in Q1 because of a particularly bad winter and, at any rate, no CCW permits were issued in Q1.

  31. Murders went right back up in Q2 and Q3. Murders were down in Q1 because of a particularly bad winter and, at any rate, no CCW permits were issued in Q1.
