How Exactly Does Obamacare Help Americans, If 80% Of Deductibles Rise?

Posted on March 14, 2014

Four out of five U.S. companies have either already raised deductibles on their employee health plans or are considering it thanks to Obamacare, according to a survey of over 700 businesses by consulting firm Mercer LLC.

A third of the companies surveyed have already hiked deductibles or co-pays and another 48 percent are contemplating options that increase health-care payments by workers themselves, Bloomberg reports.

Health-care costs for customers and companies alike are continuing to rise, partly because of Obamacare-instated essential benefits that all health-care plans must now provide.

The more controversial benefits insurers must provide in all plans are pregnancy and child-care services, which have received pushback from men, women past childbearing age, and even nuns.

While the Obama administration has twice tried to delay enforcement of this rule, many state insurance commissioners rejected the delay in 2013 and plan to do so again this year.

Many U.S. companies are taking even more drastic action already. Large businesses like Target, Trader Joe’s and Home Depot have stopped offering part-time employees health insurance at all, instead encouraging them to opt for Obamacare exchanges instead.

UPS chose to cut its costs by dropping insurance for any employed spouses of their employees. Mercer found that 8 percent of employers have cut spousal coverage as well, and an additional 11 percent of companies are thinking about making such a change in 2015.

And while deductibles and co-pays may be going up for most employees, the caliber of plans may be going down. Businesses are worried about the so-called “Cadillac tax” and are ramping down their health-care coverage accordingly.

The Cadillac tax will hit businesses that already offer the best health benefits with a 40 percent tax. Companies that provide coverage over an annual value of $10,200 per year for individuals and $27,500 for families will pay the fees and pass $1,200 of them onto their employees per year, according to a report last year from Towers Watson.

  1. Embrace your disaster liberals. You have given(forced) poor people insurance that they can't afford to even use. Yes. That is what the poor need….. high deductibles. Then liberals attack the real wages of the poor by inflationary monetary policy. You only "need" to hike the minimum wage because you destroyed the value of said wage year after year.

Nothing about care, it is about control and the destruction of America!

How does Ovomit help America with anything?

  4. WhiteFalcon says:

Increasing the minimum wage is itself inflationary.

  5. With the millions that have been thrown off their old (now 'non-compliant') insurance plans, added to the millions who didn't have, didn't want, or couldn't afford healthcare insurance in the first place, not only has the Democrat's push toward universal socialized healthcare managed to raise prices of both insurance AND healthcare, it has resulted in even MORE uninsured, and a quality of care than will only go down.

Yes it's a disaster. Yes Obama for crass political considerations has delayed the worst of the effects until AFTER the next couple of elections to avoid an awakened and furious electorate. But don't believe for a minute that this is all unintended.

While we are all busy thinking that Obama and his handlers have thrown egg in their own faces and admitted that their plan doesn't work, watch out for the sucker punch.

Remember the whole point of Obamacare (beyond controlling people) is to achieve the holy grail – a fully socialized, single-payer universal system of nationalized healthcare.

Watch for the Obama and the Democrats increasingly argue that they have "tried" the free market (although calling the government run healthcare insurance Exchanges a free market in any sense given the mandatory one-size-fits-all nature of the benefits offered is a laughable farce) – and that given that even MORE hapless, helpless, and hopeless Americans are now uninsured or with private (albeit government mandated) policies that are unaffordable, that the only solution is for the government to be the single-insurer, single-payer.

It will start small of course, with an expansion of the subsidies or relaxed rules for participation in Medicare and Medicaid, but because of bureaucratic waste all of those state and federal programs will ultimately be consolidated and merged into a National Healthcare Administration – and what remains of private insurance and private doctors will be declared illegal.

Don't take my word for it – remember Hillarycare? And who is at the top of their ticket for 2016, with voter ID laws stymied and a huge slush fund of "economic assistance" in the works ready to shovel out to Democrat operatives?

  7. The deductibles are so high on the lower cost plans that the poorest of us will forgo medical treatment for anything serious. This will certainly cut back the population of the older poor that drain the system. Perhaps they can spend the money saved on green energy. See my blog at http://cranky-conservative.blogspot.com

  8. The high deductibles reintroduce market forces, don't they?

  9. The first black president and the only thing he has to show for it (unless he kicks off WWIII with Russia or China) is the train wreck that bears his name.

  10. carlee44 says:

obamacare does nothing whatsoever for helping people get healthcare. My daughter cannot afford healthcare premiums the 2500. dollar deductible. Its ridiculous. I think we all know where this is leading and it will be even worse. Universal healthcare. We will lose more Dr, and rationing of care will be on a larger scale. Thats what obamacare is all about. It is so people wont be able to use it and will be happy to exchange it for socialized medicine.

  11. It doesn't , it was never intended to. It is just a grand control mechanism and illusion. That is becoming beyond obvious and many saw it from day one? We live in many such illusions perpetrated deliberately to control you and your tax dollars ! Wake up Amerika , time is running out ?

  12. Robert What? says:

You do realize of course that this never was about “helping” people – it was always about government power. “Helping people” was how it was packaged for the American people, who ate it up.

  13. combatvet52 says:

This is one American that didn't eat up his BS the liar in chief is an evil thief …….. PERIOD

  14. What it does is make those of us who have health insurance stop using it because we have to pay so much out-of-pocket and such high premiums, that we can't afford to access it! Then it gives the ones who are not paying FREE healthcare with not even a simple co-pay. However, the doctors won't accept Medicaid and Medicare any longer because of the low reimbursement rates, so even those people are having a hard time accessing healthcare. So, hospitals are laying off nurses and other workers, and the healthcare industry is suffering. I have a group state plan, and our deductible went from $350 to $420, and I'm not supposed to complain because others have it worse than I do. However, just a few years ago, my deductible was only $100. Now, for families to have to come up with this $420 for several family members, it's prohibitive on top of the monthly premiums we are forking out along with what our employers are paying. It's created a system that collect large sums of money and pays out very little..only for catastrophic illnesses, and then it limits that so hopefully the person will just go ahead and die and get off the roll. I'm totally disgusted that our Congress took the "we have to pass it to see what's in it" path. Now we're married to the devil and can't divorce him!

  15. Get off it. Obamacare was NEVER intended to "help" Americans. They were just fed this crap to lull them to sleep long enough for it to get through Congress, and for Obama to sign it.

Asking "Why is this happening" just shows how late the blogger got to the party.

  16. While Americans are forced to deal with Obamacare, he is funding health care for KENYANS! http://www.wnd.com/2014/03/obama-really-is-helpin
