Death Panels: Palin Was Right, Says Liberal Salon.

Written by Robert Murphy on October 24, 2013

Remember in 2009 when Sarah Palin warned that Obamacare would lead to “death panels”? People ridiculed her alleged right-wing paranoia; PolitiFact christened her accusation the “Lie of the Year.” In this context, it’s ironic that a recent Slate article admits that socialized medicine goes hand in hand with government death panels. What’s even more disturbing is that the author–Adam Goldenberg–applauds the practice.

Specifically, Goldenberg explains that “Canada Has Death Panels”; this is the very title of his piece. Here’s the news hook:

Last week Canada’s Supreme Court ruled that doctors could not unilaterally ignore a Toronto family’s decision to keep their near-dead husband and father on life support. In the same breath, however, the court also confirmed that, under the laws of Ontario, Canada’s most populous province, a group of government-appointed adjudicators could yet overrule the family’s choice. That tribunal, not the family or the doctors, has the ultimate power to pull the plug.

In other words: Canada has death panels.

And yet Goldenberg’s purpose is not to warn Americans to turn back now, lest we follow Canada down this horrifying path. On the contrary, Goldenberg thinks this outcome is just swell:

Perhaps it is easier for Canadians to trust government-appointed panels, rather than judges, with decisions like these. For reasons that arguably go back to our respective foundings, Canadians tend to have more faith in our government and our bureaucratic processes than Americans do in theirs…

[T]he question is no longer whether we can “play God,” but when, how, and who should do so. When humanity demands haste, and justice demands expert knowledge, Ontario’s death panels offer a solution—whatever Sarah Palin says.

  1. Lesson – never, never, never… believe, trust, compromise, or contract with a liar!. If you do, you may elect one, and lose your freedom and the heritage your forefathers fought and died for. Wallowing in deception is wallowing in evil!

  2. Our country is in trouble. Returning to God is our only answer,

  3. You may want to rephrase that. To many people, government IS God.

  4. Make the family pay for 24/7 care for someone in that condition and see how fast the family pulls the plug.

  5. At least the family will be making the decision and not some stranger who never knew the loved one and doesn't care whether or not the loved one lives or dies. It's hard to make that decision – I know.

  6. George Morgan says:

The family all paid for insurance ' ,so why should they '?

  7. So the fact that Canada has created a populace of maleable sheeple is a plus? That Government can better make personal decisions for people? That people are not capable of making their own decisions? That people not in Government have no ability to judge or to have individual thought processes to come to a correct solution? That the Canadian populace are retarded and we would be better served to be the same? This man is a slobbering knuckle dragging moron. Or simply evil. But certainly one or the other.

Explains the disaster Obamacare (unaffordable healthcare act) web site is . It was created by a Canadian firm. So the retarded people that this man extols created the fiasco. How apropo.

  8. Riiiight, because Canada is the United States and the same thing could totally happen here.

    Or not.

  9. I applaud your comment. The voters of this country don't vote for the good of it but for what they will get.. We are teatering on the edge of the ruination of this Great Country. Too many have lost their life and limbs so that we would be free from
a tyannacal government. If the voters aren't given a clear choice between good and evil instead of the qualifications of the past candidates it doesn't look good for the America I grew up in.

  10. One thing about Sarah Palin is that she is honest! The minute the liberals attacked her, I knew they were afraid of her! Why? Because she is honest! The left cannot stand truth! Obama is the epitome of dishonesty: He is an inveterate liar as has been documented on every recorded statement he has made; he is a deceiver of the worst kind; he is constitutionally ineligible to be President; he is a traitor as proven by his involvement in the Fast and Furious scandal, the Benghazi scandal, in both cases Americans died; the IRS scandal, and his masterpiece, Obamacare which was never intended to provide quality health care, but was designed to control every aspect of the people's lives, to crush small business and to wreak havoc on the economy and bring America down! The Democrat talking heads on the various news programs ought to be ashamed, but that goes to their character–they have no shame! But then, they "boo'd" God at the Democrat National Convention!

  11. Just google "73743-healthcare.wmv" this will explain why healthcare is so expensive, plain and simple a youtube video that about illegal aliens have destroyed our healthcare system. You won't believe what you hear and see.

  12. J. Mitchell says:

When I first seen barak obama I did not know who he was, this is years ago before the disaster of his election. I told a friend this man is evil, just look at his eyes. I was right. He opens his mouth and the lies just flow out. He hates OUR country, military and OUR God, however you worship. I pray for each night for OUR country, military and Our Savior.

  13. Gober, it is much more complicated than just illegal aliens. There are too numerous concerns, including, insurance companies, unions, government health care, health regulations, law suites, equipment, medicine, increase in average life span, supply and demand, inflation, etc, etc.

  14. Marilynn Reeves says:

America is not the country we grew up in anymore. Entitlement is the word of today's America and it has to stop. People today don't want to work because we have made it too easy for them not to. The 1st requirement for any help should be to have some type of job.

  15. Roy Acryin says:

AMEN!! History has proven time and time again that when a Godly nation turns its back on God, they suffer. But when that nation returns to God, they are forgiven and prosper. The history of the Jews is a prime example.

  16. According to the World Health Organization the United States spent more on health care per capita ($8,608), and more on health care as percentage of its GDP (17.2%), than any other nation in 2011. As a percentage of GDP, health care expenditures are rising faster than any other sector. Health *outcomes* have remained stagnant or worsened in the last decades, with the epidemics of obesity and sedentary jobs costing US citizens hundreds of billions of dollars.

Someone has to make the hard decision to deny a 400 pound 70-year old his 6th triple bypass ($200,000 each – the money's not coming out of his pocket!!) when it can only add up to 1 year to his life, and he only has a 40% chance of surviving the procedure. 'Death panels' are a blessing. Our curse is having easy access to prohibitively expensive and minimally beneficial procedures.

  17. How about if they decide to put the money on a scale and then look at using that amount to keep a sick innocent person alive – or use the same amount to keep someone that is a murderer, rapist, scumbag on death row alive.

Wait, they say the death row person needs dignity and the judge and jurymay have been mistaken !!! Does not the same appy to the ill person (and perhaps even more so) ???

We have more things to do than resources. Hence all things should be efficient and not WASTE precious resources, resources that could, should, would be spent solving other problems !!!

  18. Correct Diane.

  19. WhiteFalcon says:

I felt from the beginning that Sarah was right on the money. These commieonazicraats that are in power are absolutely no better than Hitler or Sadam Husain or any of many others that can be named.

  20. Unfortunately, comas don't magically reverse themselves after one's loved one has been in one for several years.

Again, tell the family they need to take their loved one home and care for them themselves while waiting for a literal miracle.

Even Gary has pointed this out – when families have to pay the freight they become remarkably rational on how much money they're willing to spend on someone who has no realistic chance of recovery.

  21. No, it's all public money up there.

When the family is so disconnected from reality (multiple years in a coma), let them be the ones to spend $10,000+ a month keeping their loved one alive at home.

Not on the taxpayers' dime, even if it is Canada.

  22. Anyone who believes in "death panels" should lead by example and kill themselves.

  23. Canadians faith in their government goes back to years of acceptance and apathy–much like many Americans attitudes. Unfortunately, the US govt won't have that easy a road go with O-BOMB-a Care. It's imploding on its own, now all it needs is lots of pushback from citizens to retire this ill-conceived and poorly executed sorry excuse for a law.

Get the Marxist out of our house!!!

  24. Maybe you should start with your worthless self

  25. Kathy Sudduth says:

Then why did Dr. Kevorkian go to prison?

  26. It is amusing that Shane's "rebuttal", and I use that term generously here, is actually for Adam Goldenberg, who writes for Salon. Gary North is only pointing out liberals admit this now…so what does that make Shane?

  27. That's exactly what is supposed to happen: either they pay for his care or appeal to charity – failing that they pull the plug.

  28. We know who the problem is and where they are located. Take your comments to your community. Run for office. Attend community meetings. Get off the couch and make a change. Clean up local government and work your way up. Take back States Rights. Don't hire illegals. Buy American. Take a stand.

  29. If the family purchased LTC insurance, fine – they've paid for the care, assuming their benefits are still in force after 3 years.

But again, no health insurance pays for long term care – only LTC insurance.

Most people here in the U.S. who need this level of care for years are on Medicaid – and those are taxpayer dollars. Usually the state share comes from your local property taxes.

No family has the right to demand I pay their bills indefinitely simply because they can't accept the reality that their loved one will never recover.

  30. Lets make sure that all the "elite politicians" that voted for obamacare are SIGNED-UP! That way, they can see for themselves how death panels can serve their own families.. (of course this would never happen to them, even if they signed up, they will always make themselves the "exceptions.)

  31. Boo hoo. Pass the magnum of sour grapes, anonymous.

  32. Bryan76016 says:

We need some way to make NEWS organizations "Eat Their Words" when they lie or mistakenly print a lie, the need to "recant" ten fold and at the same time of day that they "mistakenly" (bias showed) said/printed their lie. Otherwise lose their "news" credentials.

  33. Bryan76016 says:

Because the nation still had a conscience when the "Dr." (doctors heal they "do no harm.") was sentenced. Now that "their conscience is seared with a hot iron" no sin is too great to accept. That's how we got obama.

  34. bless2live says:

Death panels for America's finest citizens VS no death panels for America's people convicted of murder(s)! Kill babies in the womb but keep convicted murders alive! America has some twisted corrupt lawmakers!

  35. Bryan76016 says:

    Evil.

  36. Howard Quinn says:

Allowing those who sneak across our borders, take our welfare, work jobs for money under the table, leave their country in shambles, legal status or even citizenship makes my citizenship worthless. It also defiles those who gave their lives for this country and constitution. We must send them all back to their corrupt countries and leave us in peace.
It seems to me that the only way to solve this problem is to act accordingly against the people in Washington that are on a course to modify our way of life, so as to allow the government full control of our money, family, health and daily lives.
Vote them out all over this country city,,state and Federal.

  37. Slippery slope – who gets to decide what's COST EFFECTIVE? What's best for the community, the tribe? Is that America?…or some other culture?

Ok: I don't want to pay for fat people's knee replacements and hernias, drug users' rehab, alcoholics' liver transplants, junk food eaters' triple bypasses, and loose women's birth control AND ABORTIONS!

Tell me me why I should pay for these when I, not perfectly but to the best of reasonable ability, live responsibly? I've heard that the majority of health problems are self-inflicted (poor eating and sleeping habits, drugs, stress, sloth, etc.).

  38. OregonBuzz says:

Evil is the absence of God, as dark is the absence of light.

  39. OregonBuzz says:

“If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.”. – Joseph Goebbels, Minister of Nazi Propaganda

  40. Death panels administrated by appointees of the ruling political party no less.
Just anothger way to describe a pogrom.
Wait'll the Serba get a handle on this one.

  41. Re: TM,
    — According to the World Health Organization the United States spent more on health care per capita ($8,608), and more on health care as percentage of its GDP (17.2%), than any other nation in 2011.–

I don't understand. Why is spending more a bad thing all of a sudden? I thought we didn't have a spending problem.

  42. Re: ncbill12,
    — Unfortunately, comas don't magically reverse themselves after one's loved one has been in one for several years.–

That's not a rebuttal to what VRG is arguing, ncbill. You're not addressing the free choice implication of his comment.
