Union Leaders Beg Reid and Pelosi: “Don’t Force Us Into ObamaCare!”

Posted on August 1, 2013

Dear Leader Reid and Leader Pelosi:

When you and the President sought our support for the Affordable Care Act (ACA), you pledged that if we liked the health plans we have now, we could keep them. Sadly, that promise is under threat. Right now, unless you and the Obama Administration enact an equitable fix, the ACA will shatter not only our hard-earned health benefits, but destroy the foundation of the 40 hour work week that is the backbone of the American middle class.

Like millions of other Americans, our members are front-line workers in the American economy. We have been strong supporters of the notion that all Americans should have access to quality, affordable health care. We have also been strong supporters of you. In campaign after campaign we have put boots on the ground, gone door-to-door to get out the vote, run phone banks and raised money to secure this vision.

Now this vision has come back to haunt us.

Since the ACA was enacted, we have been bringing our deep concerns to the Administration, seeking reasonable regulatory interpretations to the statute that would help prevent the destruction of non-profit health plans. As you both know first-hand, our persuasive arguments have been disregarded and met with a stone wall by the White House and the pertinent agencies. This is especially stinging because other stakeholders have repeatedly received successful interpretations for their respective grievances. Most disconcerting of course is last week’s huge accommodation for the employer community—extending the statutorily mandated “December 31, 2013” deadline for the employer mandate and penalties.

Time is running out: Congress wrote this law; we voted for you. We have a problem; you need to fix it. The unintended consequences of the ACA are severe. Perverse incentives are already creating nightmare scenarios:

First, the law creates an incentive for employers to keep employees’ work hours below 30 hours a week. Numerous employers have begun to cut workers’ hours to avoid this obligation, and many of them are doing so openly. The impact is two-fold: fewer hours means less pay while also losing our current health benefits.

Second, millions of Americans are covered by non-profit health insurance plans like the ones in which most of our members participate. These non-profit plans are governed jointly by unions and companies under the Taft-Hartley Act. Our health plans have been built over decades by working men and women. Under the ACA as interpreted by the Administration, our employees will be treated differently and not be eligible for subsidies afforded other citizens. As such, many employees will be relegated to second-class status and shut out of the help the law offers to for-profit insurance plans.

And finally, even though non-profit plans like ours won’t receive the same subsidies as for-profit plans, they’ll be taxed to pay for those subsidies. Taken together, these restrictions will make non-profit plans like ours unsustainable, and will undermine the health-care market of viable alternatives to the big health insurance companies.

On behalf of the millions of working men and women we represent and the families they support, we can no longer stand silent in the face of elements of the Affordable Care Act that will destroy the very health and well-being of our members along with millions of other hardworking Americans.

  1. Don’t for a moment think that the unions are suddenly against Obamacare. They are still in favor of it. They just don’t want it to apply to them.

    • Very true. They will want laws requiring health benefits for part-timers, laws requiring full-time employment, and (more) laws requiring union membership, and automatic dues withholding.

      • WhiteFalcon says:

In short, they want tyranny but they want to be at the top of the food chain and screw everyone else.

    • Dealerdeb1 says:

The problem ALWAYS with unions is they consider everyone an enemy that isn't a Marxist union member. They strong armed people, business and do nothing but destroy so why should anyone care what happens to them? Now they get to eat their own pie. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of thugs in my opinion. They helped ram this down our throats, it is a disaster of a bill, the IRS is corrupt and the Treasury Dept is unable to control them so we get stuck with yet another Progressive disaster ,. All I can say is "You voted for this now you are responsible for the resulkts of those votes"

    • You are absolutely correct. These laws are good for the OTHER people to follow. Screw the unions, Pelosi and Reid and the rest of the corrupt politicians.

    • Surprise suckers. You fell for Obama and his lies and now we all have to suffer the consequences…….. When will you learn that there is NO FREE LUNCH?

    • There is so much hypocrisy in the Democratic camp, the glare from it makes it impossible to see anything wrong on the Republican side. Doesn't mean nothing is wrong, it just means that the Democrats area spectacular suicidal disaster. And when they go down, they are taking the rest of us with them. As Pelosi says, "We won't take no for an answer."

  2. We seriously need a constitutional amendment assuring government folks cannot prosper by exemption from laws and regulations imposed on the ordinary citizenry who pay them.

    • Amen !!!!

    • The founding fathers wrote into the constitution a provision stating that the granting of titles of nobility would not be allowd. That was supposed to prevent us from having an arrogant aristocracy. But they had no idea how the federal govenment was going to operate. For one thieg, they had no idea that the feds would have an income tax or giveaways that could be meted out in favoritism, or exempted from participation the same way.

  3. You can be sure a huge issue is a potential loss of revenue for the unions: assuming dues are paid on a percentage of earnings, if workers hours are cut to less than 40 hours, the union leadership is going to lose a bundle in dues revenue collection.

  4. Amusing to hear trade unions whining about the hardships of “working men and women” when the unions themselves have done so much to drive industry and manufacturing offshore.

    • You’re a special kind of stupid. Cheap Chinese labor and America’s insatiable demand for inexpensive goods drove industry and manufacturing out of the country.

      • J Wtight says:

I’m sorry, but it is you who ate a special.kind of stupid. Take some basic economic courses and this time try staying awake. By over pricing labor costs the unions have unbalanced the labor markets in this country. It is no wonder that foreign labor was successful in moving manufacturing off our shores. The union line only works when they are the only show around.

    • Dealerdeb1 says:

I agree unions are the PRIMARY reasoin for raising the cost of production in the USA> They have unfunded retirements no company can sustain, they ruined the American auto indistry and bankrupted GM> Then they strongarm businesses like Boeing who want to relocate to Right to work states. Piss on them I hope they die a slow death

  5. Alan Goldenberg says:

That famous saying applies here. The chickens have come home to roost. Obama doesn’t need the unions anymore. I’m not so sure he will bail them out this time.

    • JohnWayne says:

Obama is in a corner. If he capitulates to the Unions, they won't love him anymore and he'll lose a lot of support for the Democratic Party. If he gives them "Special Dispensation", the American people will lynch him . . .

    • The unions sold out the American people. And, like all traitors, once the job of treason is over and done with, the new masters can't trust someone who'll sell out his own people, so they do away with them.

If you are a little Indian sellling out your tribe to the Great White Father in Washington, look out.

  6. don't believe that the unions are against obama. remember during his first run for president glenn beck showed the video of obama speaking to a group of his supporters and he said " that he want's a single payer system but the people don't want it so he was going to have to sneak it past us. " obamacare was designed to be a failure so they could replace it with single payer. the unions are in on this plan to sneak it past us.

    • Dealerdeb1 says:

Let's bankrupt their members first by continuiiung to cut their hours. If we make is so onerous to be in a union they will lose their power. The members are the pawns they have no way out or lose their jobs. They vote how they are told to vote but the contu=inually vote againstbusineess and shoot themselves in the foot ALL the time,.Makes you wonder if dear old dad wasn't right when he sai "Stay in school or you'l wingd up a dirtchedoigger" These people are STUPID, uneducated morons and should not be getting what they get now.

  7. 1baronrichsnot says:

Stick it to them, all of the staffers, all of the senators, congressmen, all of obamas staff and administration, unions, every one! Thats what the 5th amendment is about, equal protection under the law!

  8. ncbill12 says:

All federal employees including any Congressional members & staff should be forced to purchase on the exchanges.

No gold-plated plans for them anymore…

    • Dealerdeb1 says:

and they shoukldn't tax those who want and can afford those Gold Plated policies. This is America it is NOT communism where each according to their needs prevails. We are entitltled to that which we earn not what is redistributed

  9. Isn't our system wonderful? No one in government wants to enjoy Obamacare, but they say it's great for America!

    • Sounds like a candidate for governor of Texas back in the 1990's. He said if you're geting raped, you ought to lie back and enjoy it. Not that he would, though.

  10. slickzip says:

This is great ,,,, I love to see the scumbags get kicked in the face by the a–hole they call ODUMBA ,,,,,,,,,,,,,

  11. The unions will always support the democRATS , no matter who their opponents would be. Too many chiefs and not enough
    indians are running the show.

  12. Isn't this fun. His egoship is even willing to throw the unions under the bus for his narcissistic agenda. Watch out Hillary, you might be next. The President needs no one because he has himself. See my blog at http://cranky-conservative.blogspot.com

  13. 1baronrichsnot says:

Unions are by nature, a far left leaning group that endlessly petition and prostitute their votes to get things from a self serving gov't. Big business and gov't employees are also in the fray. They will always be a hindrance to freedom and conservatism. You can't serve a select few in america without breaking the constitution and laws. But that seems to be ok, equal protection, freedom and justice for all is merely a pledge, and can be broken anytime the gov't bureaucracies needs the votes to keep the sucklings voting for their freebies.

  14. RAhughes says:

I as a survivor of a Federal Retiree and do not want to lose my health Insurance (FEHB) just because Rep. Camp is trying to make a point hoping he can get rid of Obamacare. I also am against Obamacare but I feel I should not have to suffer just to make a point. I still pay toward my insurance every month and as a taxpayer also pay for it when I pay my taxes.

  15. If the unions are now against Obamacare, maybe they could make a statement and sit out the 2014 midterms. That's how you make them listen. Hit them in the wallet where it hurts

  16. vietnamvet1971 says:

DUH, KEEP the Union thugs on the Great Ones New healthcare Taxation Plan, we know they are a better class of people than we are so they deserve "Special Attention" so suck it up you over paid union boys or GO to the WH and Riot and protest to your Savior be sure to Bow down.

  17. Exempt everyone from obamacare; repeal obamacare!

  18. ROFL CGU Screw them. Force them to do exactly like we have to probable do. The dirty low life scurvy snits.

  19. peggyc41 says:

I think what is good for one is good for us all. I also think Obama loves his name attached to this so we can remember him forever and be able to say: "You know the President that didn't know what he was doing? Well this is a little present from him. That's why it's named Obamacare."

  20. Vancouver1941 says:

The administration got what they wanted from the unions-support, doing the go for it work, and there votes. The government got what they wanted so now they are just like us regular peons that have to pay highway robbery mandates, fines, taxes associated with this so called healthcare. I guess the union officials didn't pay attention to the first 2 big lies in the 2008 campaign speech" if you like your doctor you can keep your doctor" and of course how can anyone forget" nobody who makes under $250,000 a year will pay one extra dime"!! I worked for 34 years and if I lied I would have been canned immediately. But if you are a politician it does not apply.

  21. Union provided health care is the "Fat Hog".. for the Unions…. Not the workers.
Naturally they don't want that Cash Cow or the Fat Hog slaughtered. I employ Union
workers for whom I pay Health and Welfare benefits begining from the very first hour they work.
Benefits they are not elegible to receive until they have worked a minimum of 500 hours, EACH
QUARTER !. As a small contractor, it is vertually impossible for my workers to maintain
this forced health "Plan". The only true benefactor is their union.
