Concealed Carry Maps: Gun Owners Have Won

Written by Gary North on July 23, 2013

Gun owners are not losing. They are winning.

Nowhere is this more visible than in this pair of maps. The first shows concealed carry states in 1981. The second shows them in 2011.

In most states, any adult can carry a concealed pistol. Local governments may not prohibit this.

  1. We need more encouragement. This helps us to know that the Government has not taken control of everything. Could you tell us some more good news once in a while

  2. Hillbilly says:

This does not matter to the Obama administration. States rights were destroyed by Mr. Lincoln in 1863. The Feds are God now, the people be damned.

  3. Here in the heart of Dixie (Alabama) I don’t need a permit. By state law I am allowed to carry my sidearm without a permit as long as it is not concealed from view. I’d like to see a map of “open carry” states.

  4. And a law just went into effect here which forbids employers here from denying concealed carry holders the right to keep their pistols in their cars while at work!

  5. Except for the fact that more people our carrying, it's a shallow victory at best. Despite the fact the Second Amendment contains the phrase "shall not be infringed," gun owners had to petition the government for permits (licenses) to carry:

"Some Constitutionalists admit that the Second Amendment did not grant a new right but rather acknowledged an existing right. Although this assertion contains some truth, it does not alter jurisdictional overtones, especially because the constitutional framers did not provide any Biblical basis for this Amendment….

"Robertson v. Baldwin, 165 U.S. 275 (1897), affirms that 'the ‘Bill of Rights,’ were [sic] not intended to lay down any novel principle of government, but simply to embody certain guaranties and immunities which we had inherited from our English ancestors' – rather than from Yahweh. Whereas Yahweh’s law does not prohibit a man from carrying a concealed weapon (a precaution that is sometimes warranted), Robertson v. Baldwin goes on to declare, 'the right of the people to keep and bear arms (Art. [Amendment] II) is not infringed by laws prohibiting the carrying of concealed weapons….' The framers could have acknowledged the Scriptures as the foundation for this right, which would have alleviated any possibility of edicts prohibiting concealed weapons, but they did not. Instead, they allowed any given Congress to implement firearms restrictions as it sees fit.

"Because the responsibility to keep and bear arms is God-given, no one except Yahweh can withdraw or limit their use. If you are a Christian (and particularly if you are the head of your home), you were given the responsibility to keep and bear arms long before the ratification of the Constitution:

'Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand; to execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people; to bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; to execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye Yah.' (Psalm 149:6-9)6

"Constitutionalists often point out that the Second Amendment was added to deter and protect individuals from tyrannous governments. Why do Christian men need the Second Amendment to provide this entitlement when they already have Psalm 149?…"

  6. Years ago, I lived in Arizona. They had open carry. Then later, they passed a concealed carry law too. They're serious about gun rights there. The only thing better would be a law allowing people to shoot feral fascists on sight.

  7. John Thompson says:

In Missouri we have always had the right to open carry. My wife is a Graduate of the North East Missouri State Teachers Collage. We moved from Macon co. Mo. to a town named Bland she was teaching in Owensville Mo. Some how or another she had another baby. I took a job working for Westinghouse Elect Corp. It got to be a long drive from Bland to the north side of Jefferson. Any how I pulled up and parked in front of a drug store in Jefferson City There was a gun shop close by a man came walking from the gun store with a long gun over his shoulder. A woman who see the guy with the gun yelled at a foot Cop close by. She yelled to cop about the man carrying a gun. The cop explained there was no law about a gun in the open. Some City folk go crazy at seeing a gun!

  8. The 2011 map is now outdated. Illinois recently became the LAST state to allow concealed carry to some degree. They had to be ordered by the courts AND override a veto by the Governor, but they do have concealed carry permits on the books.

  9. hoffhack says:

Now it is time to expand stand your ground. And it seems that Bill Gates, Mcdonalds, Craft foods and Coca Cola have fallen in lock step with the Media and Obama and Holder on Stand your ground. The left's laughable attempt to foment a boycott of "FLORIDA ORANGE JUICE" has fallen flat on it's face, mainly because it is not consumed that much in inner City areas. But, with an estimated 100 million gun owners in the U. S. "WE COULD CERTAINLY HAVE AN IMPACT ON ALL OF THESE COMPANIES!!!! LET US ALL TAKE THE PLEDGE: "WE, THE GUN OWNING CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES WILL NOT PATRONIZE COMPANIES THAT ARE AGAINST THE SECOND AMENDMENT, AND AGAINST THE GOD GIVEN RIGHT TO BE ABLE TO DEFEND OURSELVES AND OUR FAMILIES WHEREVER WE HAVE A LEGAL RIGHT TO BE!!!"" WE NO LONGER INTEND TO ALLOW CRIMINALS AND THUGS TO BE IN CONTROL AND BE FORCED TO RETREAT!!!! I have heard that Florida Governor Scott has said that there will be no change in our Stand Your Ground laws, "Hal-ah-luh-yah!!!" I was beginning to think he had be "GELDED!!!!" after his shameful performance in the Zimmerman Case. With Florida Voters about 7-1 in favor of the acquittal, and his re-election hanging in the balance, we are not surprised.

We must now set our sights on taking back the Senate. While the Republicans may not be a perfect solution, right now, let's face it, they are our only solution, I am sorry, but those who think a third party is currently an option are just not being realistic!

And it was released by the Seminole Florida Sheriff's department that, that last week, at great risk to his and his wife's personal safety, GEORGE ZIMMERMAN AND ANOTHER UN-NAMED MAN RESCUED A FAMILY OF 4 FROM THEIR OVER TURNED SUV!!!!!! HOW DO YOU LIKE THEM APPLES BARRACK, ERIC, PIERS, AND JUDGE (white Wookie) NELSON???

"""""MOLON LABE!!!""""" (come and take them)

  10. Ignorance is bliss with you, isn't it?

  11. And actually it began with the Framers that were sent merely to Amend the Articles.

  12. er/and the commandment that says thou shalt not murder and the implied flip, thou SHALT protect innocent life, the life of your family, the unborn, etc.

  13. hoffhack,
Kudos to you. Spread the word to all gun owners to boycott all the anti-2nd Amendment companies. I am all for it!! Except for the list of companies you mentioned, I would like to know what other companies.
    Let's get it on.

  14. 1baronrichsnot says:

Glory be! made me feel safer, if I leave mine home, someone can protect me. It worked in the theatre, and a couple of other places against liberals, (they so far have been the only shooters). It is a good stopgap until help arrives, ie. the police, average response time 15-20 min. Things sometimes are already under control when they arrive. About all they have to do is cuff em. It will be a pleasure to throw these crooks out in the mid-terms. Things can and will continue to improve as soon as we remove the impediments.

  15. Amen!

"But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house [including spiritual and physical protection], he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel." (1 Timothy 5:8)

  16. BillHickock says:

Indiana, Kentucky,Georgia, Oklahoma, the list goes on. There are many open carry states. Why would you want to advertise that you are carrying. In today's world that is not smart. Keep an advantage with it concealed !!!

  17. …. those who think a third party is currently an option are just not being realistic ….

Those of us who think a second party is currently an option are way closer to the mark!

  18. Shel Rama says:

What we really need is a "UNIVERSAL" concealed carry permit, good in all of the 50 plus Guam, Puerto Rico, U. S. Virgin Islands, etc.

  19. Don't allow the Feds to "provide" anything…what they "provide" today they can revoke tomorrow! They lie, cheat and steal – don't EVER trust the Federal Government (at least until there are no more Marxists in office – which will never happen)!

  20. Murder is defined as the shedding of innocent blood. Killing someone who is trying to hurt you is not murder in the biblical definition. IF you are not innocent anyway. Accidental killings were protected by sending the person to a city of refuge that were identified throughout Israel. This would separate them from vengeful families. Executing a rapist or murderer is not murder, it is simply killing by biblical terms.

  21. Nikita63 says:

If there were NOT an increasing and obvious need for concealed carry and the reinforced right to keep and bear arms under the 2nd amendment, there would NOT be the expansion in the states of these rights. Why? because they would not be deemed a necessity by the populace at large if Government and law enforcement were WQUITABLER butt, THEY ARE NOT: IN PRACTICALLY ANY VENUE ANDS WHILE AMERICANS MAY BE SOMEWHAT IMPAIRED BY OBAMA INDUCED KOOL -AID, THEY ARE NOT TOALLY, INTELLECTUALLY WASTED….. ,YET!

  22. hoffhack says:

you lost me! WQUITABLER butt????????? I think I see it…..EQUITABLE, but they are not!!!………….. Had me scratching my head there for a while!! But yes, I agree!

  23. Dennis Capshaw says:

    Mr. Hillbilly,
Actually, states rights suffered a little under Mr. Lincoln, but where they were really trashed was under Woodrow Wilson, when the election of Senators was changed to a direct vote of the people instead of by the state legislatures. It was called the 17th Amendment. The states had a seat at the table where power is concerned before that. Now the senators are beholden to the federal government, and don't have the power to check federal authority, nor are the Senators beholden to the state legislatures for their re-election anymore.

  24. Blair Franconia, NH says:

    Yes, they have.

  25. Dennis Capshaw says:

The republicans have proven a new party is not only realistic but necessary. The tea party is fine by me. The republicans have become nothing more than cheap imitations of the Dumbocrats.

  26. Without due process??!?

  27. Don't you people get it ??!! If you have to get a permit, ITS NOT A RIGHT !! Concealed or open carry, WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE ??? !!! God's Law doesn't make such ridiculous restrictions. Turn back to Him and His Perfect Laws, Statutes and Judgments and stop clinging to the constitution, which most of you don't understand anyway.

  28. buster,
there is a pretty good starting list of anti-2a companies here: http://www.2acheck.com/the-boycott-list/

  29. Now maybe the good armed citizens can be a deterrent to the armed outlaws. It will be interesting to see the drop in gun related crime and death now that the state finally is following the constitution a little.

  30. Hillbilly says:

Excellent point. Thanks for expanding. Sadly, most people in the country do not even know that such a thing as the Constitution exists and if they do don't know the purpose of same. A recent poll taken showed that when read the First Admendment most Americans thought it was a bad thing to be governed by. Scary.

  31. As is Texas, there are roughly 26 States with Open Carry.

  32. Adding to the list is: Progressive Insurance, GM and Chrysler (Dodge) naturally, Apple (Mac, iPhones, iPads…ect.), Samsonite Corporation, Facebook, Sony Entertainment, DreamWorks, Costco, Google, G.E., Capital One, Starbucks, Ben & Jerry's, Best Buy, Target, Walgreens, Subway, Quiznos, O'Reilly Automotive, Advance Auto Parts, Popeye’s, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Big Lots, Tractor Supply, Bridgestone, Foot Locker, Papa John’s, Darden Restaurants, Boost Mobile, Khols, Lowe's, Urban Outfitters, Foot Locker, Pep Boys, Lumber Liquidators, Sherwin-Williams, Old Navy, Pier 1, Whole Foods, Cheddar’s, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Disney Stores, Jack in the Box, Cox Communications, DirecTV, and more…list as of 2008.

  33. Wait & See says:

I wouldn't hold my breath applying for anything in California. Strangely enoughI I believe only Liberal Democratic Party politicians get CCW Permits as they make themselves so popular with their electorate. I meet the odd law enforcement officer from time to time, who carries off duty. But the normal joe who feels the need, or has been the victim of a crime, is going to be denied 99.9999% of the time. He is told to call 911 and carry on bleeding whilst the Dispathcer will assign priorities – if ever.
Up until a few years ago the so called 'Crimes Commited with an Assault Rifle were a figment of the Left's imagination, their crass publicity is now making that former imaginary crime becoming normal procedure in Californian Cities. Life tends to follow art and the morons get most of their bad ideas from 'Obama's Friends in Hollywood' – who can all hire licensed professional armed guards for their own security. Ah ! Life in the Golden State !

  34. California has some of the more Draconian gun laws now. The liberals in the state capitol cannot go without a new gun law proposal, it seems monthly. Gangs still get their guns and amo and it will always be that way. Simply, the criminal element does not obey laws. Our 2 Senatorial representatives, Feinstein and Boxer dance to the same liberal tune, so trying to make one's conservative voice be heard is a waste of time. The Golden state is no longer Golden

  35. Hillbilly, right! Lincoln did destroy states rights by declaring war on the southern states, and causing over 600,000 people to be killed; homes, farms, and yes plantations, destroyed, for what? Answer: The North fought the war over money. Plain and simple. When the South started Secession, Lincoln was asked, "Why not let the South go in peace?" To which he replied, "I can't let them go. Who would pay for the government?" Sensing total financial ruin for the North, Lincoln waged war on the South. The South fought the War to repel Northern aggression and invasion.

  36. Hubby and I live in Arkansas and we both have a CCW, Arkansans can't carry openly unless on a trip, which usually means county to county depending on the way a state trooper interprets the law which Governor (D) Bebee signed inbto law effective July 1, 2013. The new law is so vague, even the police don't know if it means open carry or just on a trip, so for now, we'll just hold on to our CCWs.

  37. One of the problems is that many politicians don't believe in God nor our Bible, therefore no God-given right to defend ourselves, and in my opinion, nobody can believe in God when they support abortion on demand – killing God's children by "ripping up women with child." God said He would punish those who did. Amos 1: 13.

  38. The following might interest the writer and or others.

Requiring the law abiding citizen to undergo as background check in order to purchase arms, no matter how much lipstick one puts on this particular pig amounts to the following. The law abiding citizen is required to obtain the permission of faceless bureaucrats to exercise a constitutional right. How does that, in the lasdt analysis, sit with you dear reader, and never mind the possibility that requiring a background check MIGHT prevent an unfit person from LEGALLY obtaining arms.

But wait, there's more. In some localities, there is a fee attached to this background check. The charging of a fee or taxing the exercise of a constitutional is a "no-no", according to the USSC ruling in Murdock v Pennsylvania, 1943. Read it for yourself.

  39. Rattlerjake says:

First there will be a rise in gun deaths as the legal gun owners shoot the criminals, then very quickly the numbers will fall.
