In 2012, the IRS demanded that the Conservative Leadership Institute turn over the names of its student interns. It also demanded the names of interns in 2008. No other years were audited.
Both were election years.
The IRS demanded the following:
Copies of applications for internships and summer programs; to include: lists of those selected for internships and students in 2008.
In regards to such internships, please provide information regarding where the interns physically worked and how the placement was arranged.
After completing internships and courses, where were the students and interns employed?
The Leadership Institute refused to comply. It supplied none of this information.
The IRS found nothing amiss, but it cost the Leadership Institute $50,000 in legal fees.
The Leadership Institute is the premier training organization for college conservatives. I have known the founder, Morton Blackwell, for over 30 years. The organization is strictly educational. It trains college students in the techniques of communications. The Institute’s programs have led to the creation of scores of campus alternative newspapers.
Liberals fear that this scandal will undermine the credibility of the IRS. The premise is that the IRS has any credibility to be undermined.
