Public Schools Give Kids Attention Deficit Disorder.

Written by Gary North on April 2, 2013

In a recent study requiring 76,000 telephone interviews, the Centers for Disease Control spent a bundle of money. Nobody at the CDC is saying how much money.

What did the CDC find? That almost 20% of boys in public schools squirm a lot. This is twice as many as girls.

The CDC has diagnosed this at attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, also known as “I’d rather not be here” disorder.

It is higher in states where boys can go hunting instead of sitting in school. In South Carolina, Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas, the squirming is intense: 23%.

The solution is drugs. Legal ones. The ones supplied by the pushers: public schools. These drugs keep people from squirming.

The figures showed that an estimated 6.4 million children ages 4 through 17 had received an A.D.H.D. diagnosis at some point in their lives, a 16 percent increase since 2007 and a 53 percent rise in the past decade. About two-thirds of those with a current diagnosis receive prescriptions for stimulants like Ritalin or Adderall, which can drastically improve the lives of those with A.D.H.D. but can also lead to addiction, anxiety and occasionally psychosis.

“Those are astronomical numbers. I’m floored,” said Dr. William Graf, a pediatric neurologist in New Haven and a professor at the Yale School of Medicine. He added, “Mild symptoms are being diagnosed so readily, which goes well beyond the disorder and beyond the zone of ambiguity to pure enhancement of children who are otherwise healthy.”

Well, what does he know? When high school boys squirm, it’s time for drugs. Ask high school teachers, especially in the South. Therefore, “the American Psychiatric Association plans to change the definition of A.D.H.D. to allow more people to receive the diagnosis and treatment.”

The free market is taking over. Kids receiving the pills are selling them to classmates.

When you are listening to some tax-funded, tenured drone, and you would rather be hunting, pills help.

In the past, the squirming disease was thought to affect 3% to 7% of children.

How is the disease diagnosed? “The disorder has no definitive test and is determined only by speaking extensively with patients, parents and teachers, and ruling out other possible causes — a subjective process that is often skipped under time constraints and pressure from parents. It is considered a chronic condition that is often carried into adulthood.”

Conclusion: When Billy Bob starts squirming, his teachers make the diagnosis. “Dope the dope!” Result: 10% of high school boys are receiving drugs for the condition.

Medicaid covers the cost of the drugs for poor families. The children in these families have one-third more instances of the disease. Conclusion: incentives work. If the government pays to treat a condition, there will be an increase in the supply of this condition.

“Sales of stimulants to treat A.D.H.D. have more than doubled to $9 billion in 2012 from $4 billion in 2007, according to the health care information company IMS Health.” The recession has not hurt this industry!

If your kid is squirming in public school, a solution is to pull him out of public school. Kids who are not in public schools usually stop squirming.

There are two main solutions: homeschooling or doing chores around the house. Teenage kids facing this choice usually stop squirming.

Homeschooling works. But when it’s either prescribing drugs or chores, I recommend chores. It’s cheaper. Also, parents avoid extra chores.

  1. These are the kids who go on to commit suicide or shoot up mutiplexes and malls, but Americans are never told of the connection between SSRI's and increased violence.

  2. NoMoreMarxistsInDC says:

Maybe time to sue the schools for not giving our kids a proper education involving reading, writing and arithmetic, along with a healthy dose of US History I and II, and phys. ed. for an hour per day.

  3. Danno, you are 100% right. The destruction of future society is in plain view for anybody to see.Unfortunately most of the populace is too dumbed down thenselves to see it

  4. I am a psychologist. I agree. My second son was quite active and distractable. We home schooled him for a year. He did great. But he wanted to be back with his friends. He went back to school, and I coached him on how to do better. He now has a M.S. in engineering. ADHD is mostly an "iatrogenic" disorder, a disease caused by the doctor. In this case, the school is the "doctor" and hyperactivity is a fairly normal reaction to an abnormal situation.

  5. Who could sit still for hours of boredom? The teachers know very little and could care less because they are controlled by a central bureaucracy. Those people in the central office rose through the ranks being "yes" people to bosses who were clueless. Everyone has to say "yes" or lose their jobs. And the kids sit there all day BORED out of their skins!

My question, "is the drone weaponized"?

  7. back to school? wanted to be back with friends?

  8. duh, maybe it is time to separate school from state!!!

  9. It's the connection between government skrools and increased violence Danno…that is the connect!

  10. I agree Maggie! The children aren't being taught very much today by the unqualified apathetic teachers (not all but most) and the kids are bored to death. I'm an old man now but I was one of those A.D.H.D. kids back then but it wasn't called a disorder at that time. These types of personalities are easily distracted and probably would do much better in a home school environment where they can be taught in a one on one situation. With that said, most of the time that I was in school, I would have much rather been fishing, hunting, on a horse, working with the cows or anything to burn off energy! I believe that some kids just have an abundance of energy and need several activities each day to get rid of the excess. One size don't fit all when raising kids, they are all different. So, public (government) schools with one set of rules for all, just don't work for all and probably never did!!!

  11. Also, look at what the kids eat.
When my son was at a public school, he was given:

    l. a piece of candy in the morning when he handed in his homework
    2. a piece of candy on the way out to recess if his name was not on the board
3.a piece of candy at the end of the day if his name was not on the board

all the kids were like trained seals, trained to obey to get candy

not to mention, all the "parties" with more sweets..

i also see parents buying their kids donuts and coke for breakfast at the donut shop in the morning

kids today are not getting adequate nutrition, nor exercise, nor chores, all of which leads to squirming.

most are deficient in Omega 3s, whereas our great grandparents had mostly unprocessed diets with grass fed meat and eggs full of omega 3s–grandparents also routinely got unprocessed cod liver oil. Now i'd venture to say less than one percent of today's kids get unprocessed cod liver oil.

today's kids are getting pop tarts and lucky charms! empty foods producing anxious, empty brains

  12. just let them use pot it's safer not man made the only thing that may be needed is some more food. That man made bull crap is bad for the kids. GOD knows best.

  13. Babsan correctly said ‘Unfortunately most of the populace is too dumbed down themselves to see it’.
Meaning that they too, went to public schools.

It would be nice to see how many childrenn have these problems who go to private schools, charter school, and who are home schooled.

  14. Get serious. Kids are not given medications by a doctor because they are squirming. If they're getting medication from a reputable doctor, it's because they're out of control and keep others from learning. First thing, parents should teach their kids how to behvae in school. Like those of us who were brought up well, you could jump around at lunchtime, after school, before school, weekends. YOu can also learn to shut up and listen—these will be required in the vast majority of jobs. I've seen some kids who shoulkd have been on meds and weren't, and they were completing out of control and the parents had long given up. THey destroyed every class they were in, damaged things and were only manageable when they were stoned—which they managed to do for themselves.

  15. Not even most, but lets be real. None of us loved every subject we took, but we didn't expect to be entertained at school. We were expected to behave, take notes, study, do homework and do our best—as we are expected to do in jobs and public places. If they don't study and do homework, they are not students, just occupiers of seats. Parents need to requirre kids to do work at home, chores and schoolwork and reading, and make play a privilege not a 24-7 right and demand. We don't change the traiffic laws or theft or murder laws because some people don't like them or don't geel comfortable with them. When you are in a group setting, your behavior has to facilitate the learning or work of the group, not distract from it.

  16. Actually man bureaucrats did not rise through the ranks–thats the problem. THey were always bureaucrats and have no clue. There is nothing lazier and more boring thsan someone who is always whining about being bored. At some point in life (school and home are a good place to learn this), you need to shut up, suck it up, do what you have to do, and then try to find some way to make it personal, intersting and/or useful. GThe right attitude is imbued at home and goes a long way.

Most of us did not like all our subjects, but we did what we had to do–and we're still employable today because of it.

  17. Not, the real cause is the extremely high illegitimacy rate–no MEN in the home to enforce discipline, and generation after generation knowing they are entitled to play all day and get checks in the mail. Change that and you have much higher achievment–as you did with the tens of millions of legal immigrants who passed through the same systems.

  18. The teachers in some instances have been found to give passing grades to students in order to make it look as though they were really learning. This Makes the teacher look good. They also blame this on Bush and no child left behind. He has caused them to give standardized tests and the students can't pass them. Why can't they pass them? Because they haven't been taught the things they need to know.

I have a grand child that missed 60 days of school and passed because they said no child left behind would not allow them to fail him. Are you kidding me? They talk about more money for education. Are you kidding me?

  19. What do we have as a president in the US? We see news about doing away with guns for the honest people and nothing to take them from the criminals. We have politicians , all of whom have armed guards, but the average person is to go with nothing. They talk about gun running being the problem. Let's hear a few words from the Department of Justice about gun running. What, they have been doing that? Surely not.

  20. retired teacher says:

    ritalindeath.com

kids need to get off sugar
    they will not
have you ever done a home visit as a teacher?

    unbelievable what they are fed

one of my students lived on doritos and 3 big gulps per day
mom did not care, it kept him off her back

    no dad in home

he ended up in "non public" special ed placement at 60k per year or so
as he was so uncontrollable, non stop sugar highs alternating with low blood sugar

    dysglycemia

    violent

  21. I think it is the responsibility of educational professionals to make the subject matter at least somewhat interesting for the students. Really, they're just kids, and they have to be engaged to get anything out of the lesson. The child really can't be expected to do this for him/herself. You are right that some kids need to monitor their own behavior better and be more respectful of the teacher/other students. Student disruptions add to the disjointed nature of lessons. And yes, suck up a certain amount of boredom.

  22. \Eddy Fudd says:

We, The People demand that U.S. Government schools be immediately shut down! NOW! These "schools" are nothing more than indoctrination centers for anti-American values, like homosexuality, the extreme-liberal agenda, and are seldom held accountable for the massive failure-rate and the anti-Biblical perspective. Flee these houses of demonic worship and the horse-sh-t which they feed parents (as if they are some kind of all-knowing authority on how to educate/raise YOUR children)! IT IS NOT TOO LATE…

  23. MAYBE it's time?

  24. I think there's more. This is to label these kids early and then they will really be under the government's thumb. This label could follow them as a mental disorder when it comes to owning guns and even managing their own finances. These labels have a multitude of consequences that could be used against them. Sorry for the conspiracy theory but why be so eager to medicate and label these children as inferior with mental disorders besides to getting more money and control.

  25. The factors you list are PART of the problem. Government run schools make things worse. The drugs don't help. While I won't completely dismiss the possibility that ADHD exists, the VAST majority of cases would be properly diagnosed as being normal boys.

  26. It is far PAST time. The creation of 'public' schools was the first step is destroying the nations educational system.

  27. I won't defend 'no child left behind', but the problem started long before then. I would argue the creation of the Department of Education was the first step. No child left behind in nothing more that a logical step along the road that began with government control of schools.

  28. I believe you are misusing the term 'unfortunately'. PLANNED outcomes are not unfortunate. This is not an accident. They were INTENTIONALLY uneducated.

  29. This is the first time I have heard of an 'iatrogenic disorder', but I agree. By your definition, MANY problems in our society are iatrogenic, with the government being the 'doctor'.

  30. They ARE the weapon.

  31. How many more young American males are we going to put on Psychotropic Medications? http://www.ladailypost.com/content/brief-history-

  32. Eco Lighting Designs says:

Little unknown fact about US schools vs' Chinese schools. The Chinese in the past decade have fewer cases of ADHD or dyslexia or light sensitivity since changed out their florescent lighting to LED Lighting in Classrooms. It wasn't until I worked in the lighting business that I found these facts out. The old florescent lighting created in the 50's, that we have in our classrooms causes many types of sickness and learning disabilities in kids and adults. The constant flicker of light from the mercury vapors and noise from the ballast causes anxiety, migraines, light sensitivity, in 25% of our population.

Remove the old lighting and test these same kids a year later and you find kids that are more active and achieving better grades without the lighting and noise distraction. While many things lead to learning issues and medical professionals can prescribe all the Meds, we should remove this poison from our kids classrooms since it is an easy fix that pays for itself.

  33. The saddest part is the parents that try to give their kids a good start have to buy the adulterated hormone and pesticide laden crap the FDA says is good for you.

  34. john, guest, steven, treas54: I myself am a product of government schools but survived them. While I believe they have deteriorated to complete uselessness in my lifetime (through the unionization of public employees) the underlying problem today that makes them much more deadly to the world at large is the indiscriminate prescription of untested or poorly tested psychotropic drugs.

When you read of the latest shoot-em-up, there is never any discussion of what prescription drugs the killer was on (or withdrawing from) at the time of the shooting. One of the most pernicious side-effects of these drugs is poor impulse control. But the schools and drugmakers working hand-in-hand must never be questioned or even whispered in polite company.

  35. Children Are not cattle. Children Want To Roam And Explore. Teachers Want A Herd Mentality To Make Their Job Easier With Less Effort. Boys And Girls Should Be In Separate Classrooms, Wear uniforms Andhave Parents Pay For Their Education. M
Maybe Parents Would Care If They Had To Pay Like The Rest Of The World.

  36. Gloria P. Sterling says:

As a nurse in a boys' school infirmary, I had to give meds to the boarders. There were way too many on Ritalin and most were very close to being "zombie like". I saw first hand what it can do. As a parent, I was told that my oldest was "hyper-active" by some "teachers" (I use the title very loosely). I took him to my excellent pediatrician to examine and after talking to him alone, he told me he was a very normal boy. So much for the "expert" teachers. I have found most boys to be more "wiggly" than girls when it comes to sitting still—very natural.

  37. Gloria P. Sterling says:

I feel I have to comment on my own comment, since this site has no "edit" possibility. The school was not responsible for these boys being on ritalin; they were prescribed from their home base and, of course, the school had to comply.

  38. Something as unnatural as cramming 30 kids into one room for hours at a time, and you can't understand why some kids are disruptive? Really?

  39. When my son was in second grade….

100% of the European American kids were on Ritalin or similar

About 33% of the Asian American kids were on Ritalin

My son was the only one not on medication.
We did basically, zero sugar. At home and at school, no sugar

  40. Correction:

My son was the only Euro American not on drugs.
Asian parents were smarter and had a much lower percentage of their kids on drugs.
My son had friends from school that came overnight and had a packet of five drugs to take!

  41. Good160: roll another one… just like the other one. And go back to sleep.

  42. All those people are NUTS , there is NOTHING wrong with these kids except that they are bored and restless , I was the same way but that was sixty years ago , before the drug companies ha convinced anyone that I had a " disorder . This is all about MONEY and to hell with the effect on our kids . Corporate greed has gotten control of our families through their doctors , Drop thee drugs and make education more interesting and not so confining and you would see immediate results . Nor would it hurt to have a little training in morality and decency as good character traits .

  43. It doesn't necessarily take drugs, although that's a contributory factor. Here's the scenario. Boys are boys, but the feminazis have convinced our commie union teachers in the gummint-controlled Youth Indoctrination Centers that they should be like girls, and the useless "teachers" should brow beat our little boys and try to turn them into little girls. The commie Union teacher "diagnoses" it as ADHD–and they have compliant but negligent Doctors put the kids on drugs or they threaten to boot them out of school if the parents object. After 6+ hours a day for 10-12 years of brainwashing, harassment, and real or perceived wrongs, the boys start to stockpile resentment and hate. Some snap, and they get a gun and look for the softest target they can find–a bunch of little kids held captive in a "gun-free Zone" where the shooter will not encounter any resistance. Look at the recent shootings. The shooters are mostly 17-25 year's old, white, male, loners, isolated, disillusioned, financially well-off, above average intelligence that has a history or diagnosis of mental disorders. But, it gets covered up, and no one does anything about it. Then they kill a bunch of innocent little kids and off themselves. Looks to me like if the filth in gummint want to do something about the problem, they should ban public schools–not guns.

  44. WhiteFalcon2 says:

Public schools are a great example of Adult Attention Deficit Disorder because they are for damn** sure not paying attention.

  45. Public teacher says:

As a public high school teacher of 10 years, I can tell you that 70% of my students do not want to be there, obviously. It causes them to be disruptive. Not only do they not want to listen, learn, and complete assignments, they are preventing those around them. Referrals, calls home, seat changes and verbal reprimands do nothing. Referrals cause the student to have OSS, (out of school suspension) but how does this help, other than provide a temporary less distracting class with the missing disruptor? Any punishment that I believe would work would be considered extreme, such as, have the insubordinate student dig a hole outside, then fill it back in, or janitorial work, such as sweeping hallways or cleaning lunch rooms. Punishments must deter students from repeating the behavior. OSS is a welcomed reprieve and vacation from school. I believe active teachers should be the ones in creating school regulations. We are the ones who actually know what is going on in the classrooms on a daily basis. I work my students. They feel that I run an "honors class" because I teach extra vocabulary, grammar's parts of speech and the curriculum's literature. Suing schools will not remedy this issue. There is no money to be taken from the education budget that the government hasn't cut already.
