ObamaCare Will Weigh You Every Time You Visit the Doctor

Written by Gary North on March 26, 2013

Nanny Obama is giving Nanny Bloomberg a run for his money.

ObamaCare will now force you to be weighed and measured every time you go to the doctor’s. Your BMI is important to the federal government.

Why? It’s not clear yet.

At some point, fat people will start getting nagged. That’s what nannies are for.

If you indulge in eating habits that the bureaucrats do not approve of, you will be reminded that you must change. Or else.

Or else what? It’s not clear yet.

Under this mandate in the stimulus law, Secretary Sebelius issued a regulation–developed by Dr. Blumenthal–that requires that all EHRs keep track of a person’s Body Mass Index (BMI) score. Body Mass Index is a ratio between a person’s weight and height, and is used to determine whether or not someone is overweight or obese. It is the preferred method of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for measuring obesity.

Attacking the wrong target in most cases here. The presevatives, sodium and corn syurp in processed food causes people to gain weight. In these days of high prices and no jobs and food stamps, you can only afford to buy this junk, lets say a can of soup, can of corn and etc, what else can people buy to eat with little money. That can of soup and corn will put weight on you with all the junk in it that it has.

Before too long Obama will levy an extra "weight based" tax

My doctor weighs me on every visit, because I am being treated for Type II diabetes. But why do we need a government mandate?
The bigger problem is the mandated EHR system. But BMI, while simple and convenient, is not an accurate determiner of obesity. Body builders (like Ahhnold) score quite high on the BMI scale.

  4. True. Aspartame the artificial sweetener, which goes by many clever names on ingredients labels (high fructose corn syrup, etc.) suppresses receptors in the brain that tell your body it has had enough carbohydrates. That's why you always find the soft drinks for sale right next to the potato and corn chips in grocery stores. How many parents plop their kids in front of the boob tube or game station with easy access to carbonated drinks and bags of chips to entertain themselves?

  5. Ahhh, the bitterness and shame of living in your parents basement, destined to die a virgin, has finally caught up with you. Now be quiet. Adults are trying to have a conversation.

I wonder if Michelle is in charge of this one.

Why does a message pop up saying I have voted on a particular comment when I haven't even voted yet? Does anyone else have this problem?

  8. Projecting much, Ort? LOL.

I'm fine with letting people be fat if they want to be fat, they'll just die sooner anyhow and leave more room (haha) for those of us who are fit as a fiddle.

  9. Uhh, aspartame is NOT high fructose corn syrup. Aspartame is a methyl ester of the aspartic acid/phenylalanine dipeptide. Not even REMOTELY close to high fructose corn syrup. Where the hell do you get your information?

  10. Sometimes people who are overweight have gotten so from illness and medication, as is my case. I have two severe auto immune diseases and live in pain 24/7. It has robbed me of the best years of my life. So, lets stop with the thinking that all overweight people are the way the are because all they do it roll through drive in after drive in.
Instead of arrogance being projected in being "fit as a fiddle", how about thanking The Lord above that you are not chronically ill. Just my 2 cents.

  11. It is so typical of government-run anything that the first thing they chose for reporting – the BMI calculation – is a measurement regarded by actual experts in both statistics and health/fitness to be so misleading and inaccurate as to be essentially useless for assessing individual health. So, of course, that's the one we're going to use. Food pyramid, anyone?

  12. Just one example from my own case. My BMI calculation using the height/weight method they mandate is 22.1, suggesting that I have about 22% body fat, which is pushing towards the high allowable range before a declaration of overweight. But this is entirely wrong, as anyone who looks at me can see – I have a thin but muscular frame (thanks, HIT strength training!), with little visible fat. Using the caliper method – a preferred (and still reliable) method, my actual body fat is 14-15%. So, the BMI calculation is inaccurate by a margin of 50% in my case.

  13. BMI does not know if have a large frame or small, if you are muscular or nothing but flab. It only uses two measurements to declare if you are overweight or obese. The man who invented the BMI system 150 years ago used it to measure the relative body sizes of people in different places to see how well nourished they were. He specifically stated that it was not to be used as a tool to diagnose individuals. Did you know that Tom Cruise's BMI says that he is OBESE? Do you think he is obese?

It's about as accurate as taking your age and your salary and using those to determine what your IQ is. So what if it is wrong, it is quick and easy.

  14. Misleading, inaccurate, but quick and easy. There is another method that the military uses that uses 3 or 4 measurements – but not weight – to determine your body fat %. Weight cannot tell if pounds are fat, muscle or bone. Welcome to Obamacare.

  15. I wonder what Michelles Big Mama Index says about HER.

  16. Maybe the Dept of Agriculture could use the Obamacare mandated BMI check to determine how much food assistance money to give to people on food stamps, reducing proportionately according to their individual level of obesity. The amount of food assistance money could be calculated based on a sliding scale daily calorie requirement to meet their ideal weight then multiplied by the CPI average price of a "Michelle approved" fresh produce only diet. We could use the same strategy for the capitol hill cafeteria, step on the scale to see how much lunch you get to eat today. Or state dinners at the White House or at GSA employee conferences. Imagine the possibilities. We could solve all kinds of problems….

  17. Hey wait my Doctor has been doing that for the past 30 years, I don't see why he should stop, and yes he clucks when I gain, but does not lecture. Since he is very very overweight himself.

  21. Carl Benander says:

I think Obamacare, because of it's extremely high costs, should be revoked. Having said this, it is a very good thing to have your Doctor follow your BMI very closely in order to protect your health. THere's nothing wrong with this.

BFD every time i go to the doc they do that and dont forget they do bloodpressure too they have been doin that for years without O-care

  23. More likely "They" will threaten "over weight" people with a "restriction in your access to live saving measures". When a few "chroncally obese" are admitted to the hospital "their condition will be allowed to take its course".

Never you mind all of the crap that Obama's Corporate donors slop into processed food. Sugar in some ways has addictive properties. Kind of like nicotine.

Mind you – this is the same bunch who sued "Big Tobacco". because "cigarettes are addictive". They needed the money for parks, playgrounds and other stuff.. Hilliary's brothers needed some "high tone" law experience too.

Two legs bad, four legs good.

  24. You're right on the EHR system. Our local hospital had to spend gobs and gobs of money to establish this mandatory program and my only question was, "What happened to HIPAA?" Strange how I never received an answer. I'm almost positive the hackers will follow HIPAA rules, right? (sarc) We know our government won't.

  25. Great idea!!

  26. George–
You mean like the 100+ million in America with VD, including HIV and AIDS (in the headlines lately.) Maybe the government will have them wear a VD sign. LOL. You are so ignorant that you do not realize that if you let them get away with picking on smokers and the overweight, they will soon pick on the rest of us next–for any reason they choose!!
Obamacare is not a health care law–it is a law that will have ultimate and total control of the population in the US. And, you support it. LOL.

  29. I do wonder if after the leftists round up all of the freedom-loving, the religious, the conservatives, the straight folks, the soda drinkers, the styrofoam-cup holders, the gun-owners and all of the Anglo-European-looking people, if these masterminds will use all of the bullets they are buying, or if like in past genocides, they will prefer to use Zyklon-B gas.

  30. Sodium, preservatives in food. Well lets look at this. We have covered more and more of the prime Agricultural land with roads and buildings, siphoned more of the water for peoples homes, pools, businesses and in the end left precious little for food production. So what is to be done. Chemistry intensive farming to get increased yield with less land available. Now how to make seasonal crops available over the rest of the year and to keep the perishable foods available past the storage life if it were “fresh”. We use canning or other preservation techniques. Since flavor, appearance and freedom from pathogens are a requirement for the market place measures must be taken to feed and protect the public health. Salt is used at levels higher than required for taste to reduce water availability. This ties up the water in a manner that denies it to bacteria and or fungal elements. Heat and or acids are required to prevent Botulism from producing deadly toxins. The components that are added and the production techniques required are for preservation of public health from food borne disease while allowing people to have enough food from smaller and smaller areas of production. Now as to non essential food stuffs, snack foods, sodas, and juice drinks etc these serve little beneficial purpose and do add to the adverse health effects. We have a society that does not as a whole perform tasks that require rigorous physical activity so we do not burn off enough of the calories we consume. I am in Agriculture and do as much of my work by hand labor with as little mechanical equipment as possible but it breaks a body down quickly and limits the size of any production that I can engage in. So even I am having to resort to tractors and other equipment to continue production. Now fuel costs and the costs of fertilizer, medications and complying with increasing Gov”t regulation are pressures that are making Agriculture near impossible. So what is the consumer going to, in the not so far future going to, do for food? How will you preserve the bounty of your garden for the winter, drought or when floods take out your food source? I can scale back and live off my land and perhaps help out a few neighbors but you in the city getting fat behind a desk and going to be found wanting. Most of the chemistry and process you complain about is so you can get food in the comfort of your city dwelling without the work or dependance on what is seasonal.

  31. Jolongus says:

Ok numb I see your point and it is a very good one. So in my case I am best to buy what is good for me, like low sodium and I do go for the fresh foods first. And I use kelp with iodine for the use of salt. I know it is hard sometimes to be able to afford fresh foods and they way this country is going I do need to stock pile food. So I wonder like for a can of green beans if I can rinse them and change the liquid in them might be the best way for me. But thank you for giving me some data.

  32. Same here on the BMI at the doctors. I also have Type II diabetes and fluid retention causing my weight gain. The doctor also random checks my urine for the drugs that he prescribes, mandated by the state and I have to sign papers stating that I wont drive a car while I take the prescription drugs. How much more are we going to be told to do? I also hear we will be answering questions about having guns in our homes. When are we going to say "ENOUGH?".

  33. White house and GSA would ignore it. All federal employees and of course our dear leader are above the law.
