Obama’s Raw Deal on Raw Milk

Written by Gary North on January 24, 2012

The Obama Administration said it would consider a petition on any issue if there were 5,000 petitioners. The petitions flowed in.  Then the Administration raised it to 25,000.

This is Obamanomics in action.

Even though the federal government does not actually have the right or authority to dictate what free individuals can and cannot eat, the Obama administration has officially rejected a WhiteHouse.gov petition signed by more than 6,000 Americans seeking freedom from federal tyranny against raw milk.

Food freedom advocates filed the petition as part of the We the People: Your Voice in Our Government program which, at the time, promised a response to any petition that gathered at least 5,000 signatures within 30 days. However, the federal government has since raised that signature threshold to 25,000.

A response letter to the petition from Doug McKalip, Senior Policy Advisor for Rural Affairs, rehashes the same tired nonsense about raw milk’s supposed “health risks,” and touts pasteurization as a type of Godsend for protecting the ubiquitous “milk supply” from deadly pathogens, as if all milk everywhere is exactly the same and part of a single, government-provided supply.

My physician Francis Pottenger put me on certified raw milk in 1949. I recovered my health within a few months. I was seven years old.

As you will quickly notice, McKalip’s response letter is really nothing more than a propaganda-filled form letter that was likely constructed by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), both of which have long crusaded against raw milk using faulty and deceptive “science.”

Interestingly enough, the letter begins with pleasant rhetoric about how the government “understand[s] the importance of letting consumers make their own food choices,” but quickly proceeds to beat the dead horse of raw milk pseudoscience. In the process, McKalip reveals his and the federal government’s true colors concerning freedom of food choice, which is that they could not care less about it.

It cannot be stated enough that the raw milk statistics dispensed by the FDA, the CDC, and the state and local governments that parrot them, are flawed. In the vast majority of illness outbreak cases, raw milk is almost never proven to actually have been the culprit. And as the anti-natural medicine crowd is so quick to announce every time a scientific study finds a link between nutrients and disease prevention, an “association” does not imply causation.

  1. once again folks the obama gang backed by decades of progressivism continue to relentlessly fight against four basic entities of America i.e. the CHURCH, the FAMILY, FRIENDSHIPS AND FOOD . WAKE UP AMERICA AND SMELL THE ROSES. PLEASE !

  2. Only Ron Paul wants to put a stop to this kind of CR*P!

  3. I grew up on a farm and drank raw milk daily . And what's more it come from a Gurnsey Cow , these cows produce milk that is nearly twice as high in butterfat content than the government deems healthy for consumption . In fact my entire family drank much the same kind of milk and or milk products , my grand parents lived into their 80's and my mom until nearly 90 . So bunk'm and bosh I say . Government shouldn't tell us what we can and cannot eat

  4. Best milk I ever drank was fresh from the cooler on my uncle's dairy farm; Right from the cow, through the milking machine and into the cooler at its FULL 5-6% buttr Fat content. It left one heckuva milk mustache on you.

  5. This regime and the FDA lie about raw milk. It has been proven that there are 10% fewer illnesses when you drink Raw milk instead of Pastuerized junk which by the way was created to preserve beer. I don't know about you, but I will continue to drink Raw milk instead of listening to the Obama regime who backs Big Dairy.

  6. I remember many times being at my great-aunt Hatties and she would always get a gallon glass jar of fresh milk with the cream still floating on the surface out of the icebox to pour me a glass of milk to go with my vanilla wafers. Loved it. Years later as an adult I met a old farm woman that we boat eggs from, both chicken and duck. She kept them in the cellar wrapped in foil and dated on the shell with a pencil and stored in large earthenware jars, no refridgeration, unwashed. She had a cow that she milked and didn't need all the milk ans ask me if I'd like to milk the cow 2 or 3 times a week for the milk so for a few months I got my fresh milk for free for just the labor and I had an old 2-gallon glass butter churn with zinc coated lid and crank and gears and wooden paddles so we even made our own butter and cottage cheese. I wish I could still do it it was great. Incidentaly my father graduated from high school in 1929 at the start of the Great Depression and his father died the next year and to support himself his mother and his younger sister during the depression he milked 30 head of cows BY HAND twice a day, 7 days a week for 6 years for $8 a week and all the milk and eggs he needed.

  7. How in the world did I make such a mistake…boat……I meant bought. I must be getting old.

  8. "Obamanomics" is nothing new. All admins are corrupt. Most politicians support big government against us. Ron Paul is the rare exception. I grew up on illegal raw milk bought on the black market since the fifties. The revisionist history tells us government has been out of control since its inception, here, and everywhere. People prosper IN SPITE OF government, not because of it. Thank God for the black market! The bigger the black market (free market driven underground) the less free a society is.

  9. Why do people petition, i.e., beg permission, to exercise a right? The government should be begging our permission to curb a right, not that a right can be "waived" by any individual or group. That is a legal lie (trick). When we beg, we demean ourselves, and by implication our rights. It is the government, not us, that is guilty until proven innocent. As long as we accept our guilt and beg for freedom we are neither free nor brave.
